### [4.145](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1821.4.145)

> Regarding the passage from "It is not said that these two" up to "is called lack of conscience": The other masters explain: It is not said that these two—lack of conscience and lack of shame—arise together at one and the same time, with lack of shame contemplating oneself separately and lack of conscience contemplating others separately. Rather, when shamelessness is predominant in function while contemplating one's own person, it is called lack of shame; at that time, although lack of conscience is also present when contemplating one's own person, its function is inferior. Again, when shamelessness increases in function while contemplating the persons of others, it is called lack of conscience; at that time, although lack of shame is also present when contemplating the persons of others, its function is inferior. Furthermore, the Nyāyānusāra states: "Some say that committing a transgression with shamelessness in solitude is called lack of shame; committing a transgression with shamelessness in an assembly is called lack of conscience." It is broadly as explained there. Fascicle 34 of the Mahāvibhāṣā also extensively explains the distinction between the two, which cannot be fully related here.
