> Regarding "However, in this sutra ... distinct entities such as arising": The Sautrāntika briefly indicates the intention of the sutra. In this sutra on the four characteristics, what the World-Honoured One briefly showed as the characteristics of the conditioned is that: when a conditioned phenomenon previously did not exist and now exists, it is called "arising"; when having existed it again ceases to exist, it is called "cessation"; continuing in succession along with transformation is called "stationariness"; and the prior and subsequent difference in this very characteristic of stationariness is called "alteration." What need is there here for distinct entities such as arising?
