> "Having thus explained... sameness-share, sentient beings and so forth": the following is the second major section, which clarifies sameness-share (sabhāgatā). It concludes the question and answers with a verse. 'Sameness-share' takes up the topic heading. 'Sentient beings and so forth' is the direct explanation. Existing as substantial entities of equal class is called 'sameness' (sa-), which distinguishes this from the Sautrāntikas, who posit that the substance of sameness-share is nominal. 'Share' (bhāga) means distinction; although sharing a class, their substances are distinct, which distinguishes this from the sāmānya category (padārtha) of the Vaiśeṣikas, who posit that a single entity pervades multiple dharmas. Since the share itself is sameness, it is called sameness-share (sabhāgatā); this is a karmadhāraya compound. 'Sentient beings' distinguishes them from non-sentient beings, citing that which is based upon. 'And so forth' distinguishes them from what is unequal, directly revealing the substance of the sameness-share that is based \[upon them\]. Another explanation: Having identical bodily forms and so forth is called 'sameness', revealing the produced fruit. 'Share' means cause, thus called 'share', revealing the productive cause. It is the share of sameness, hence called sameness-share; this is a tatpuruṣa compound. This derives its name from both fruit and cause. Therefore Nyāyānusāra 12 states: 'Here, bodily forms, actions, and inclinations are mutually similar, and are therefore called "sameness". "Share" means cause; there is a distinct real entity that is the cause of this sameness, and is therefore called "sameness-share".'
