> Regarding "The Western masters say... that this statement is not accepted": below, this explains that \[enlightenment occurs\] not \[merely\] by the prior thirty-four thought-moments, and therefore quotes an alternative explanation to raise a challenge. "The Western masters" are the masters of the country of Gandhāra, west of Kaśmīra. The intention of these masters is that the bodhisattva in the stage of training first generates this absorption: that bodhisattva, having first abandoned the defilements of the sphere of nothingness, then enters the path of seeing; emerging from the path of seeing, he then enters the absorption of cessation; emerging from the absorption of cessation, he cuts off the defilements of the summit of existence and subsequently attains awakening, possessing past cessation at the moment of the knowledge of destruction. Why is the statement of those Western masters not accepted here? "If one accepted their statement... afterwards arises the knowledge of destruction": the author of the śāstra explains this. If one accepts what those Western masters say, it would accord with the \*Tattvārtha-pada-śāstra\* composed by the Venerable Upagupta. That treatise states that the Buddha first generated the absorption of cessation and subsequently attained awakening. The author of the śāstra tends to favour the statement of the Western masters, which is why he gives this explanation. "Upagupta" is translated here as "Near Protection"; he appeared one hundred years after the Buddha's parinirvāṇa and was the teacher of King Aśoka. The old rendering "Youpoguduo" is an error.
