> Regarding "The commentary states... are able to be manifested": this explains the first pāda. Both absorptions are able to be manifested on the basis of both the desire and form realms. Furthermore, \*Mahāvibhāṣā\* 152 states: "Question: Where can this absorption without thought be generated? Some say: It is generated only in the desire realm, because minds in the desire realm are sharp and possess the power of verbal instruction. Other masters say: It can be generated generally in the desire realm and the three dhyānas, because it can also be generated through the momentum of prior practice and application. Still others say: It can also be manifested in the fourth dhyāna, with the exception of the heaven of non-conception, so that fruit and cause do not press excessively close against each other." The explanation is: among the three explanations, the latter two do not contradict \[doctrine\], while the first is not correct, as will be refuted separately below. Furthermore, \*Mahāvibhāṣā\* 153 states: "Question: Why can one who is born in the desire or form realms generate the absorption of cessation, but not in the formless realm? Answer: The life-faculty operates dependent upon two dharmas: first, form; second, mind. This absorption is without mind, being generated by cutting off mind. When one born in the desire or form realms generates this absorption, although mind is cut off, the life-faculty operates dependent upon form. When one is born in the formless realm, although form is cut off, life operates dependent upon mind. If one born there were to generate this absorption, both form and mind would be absent, and because the life-faculty would lack any support, it too would be severed. This would have to be called death, not entering absorption; therefore, one born in that realm cannot generate it." The explanation is: because the absorption of cessation lacks form, it is specifically excluded there; that non-conception involves form is a principle beyond question, and therefore it is not mentioned there.
