> "The phenomena produced by this condition up to: 'the name equal and immediately contiguous'" explains the name. The phenomena produced by this condition are similar before and after, equal and without interval; based on this meaning, the name "equal and immediately contiguous" is established. Question: Can the six consciousnesses mutually serve as the immediately contiguous condition for one another? Answer: They all can. Therefore the \*Pañcavastuka\* states: "Immediately contiguous to visual consciousness, the mental consciousness does not definitely arise; among the six classes of consciousness, any one of them may arise as it happens. If mental consciousness were definitely to arise immediately contiguous to visual consciousness, then the faculty of pain (duḥkhindriya) should not serve as the equal and immediately contiguous \[condition\] for pain, because the faculty of pain exists only in the five classes of consciousness. If that were so, it would contradict what is stated in the Indriya-skandha, as it says: 'The faculty of pain serves as cause, equal and immediately contiguous \[condition\], and predominant \[condition\] for the faculty of pain.' However, relying on visual consciousness to cognize form, an analytical mental consciousness is immediately evoked; therefore it is said: 'Visual consciousness first cognizes; having received it through visual consciousness, mental consciousness follows and cognizes.'"
