> Regarding "what has been cited is not proof ... without anything remaining": this is the Sautrāntika refutation. What has been cited is not proof; it is not the case that in the Simile of the Elephant's Footprint Sūtra, it intends to explain hair, body hair, and so forth by means of the internal earth element, thus turning out to be an incomplete exposition. That is to say: the earth element is narrow, while hair, body hair, and so forth are wide, possessing all of matter, odor, taste, and tangibles. If that sūtra had said, "What are hair, body hair, and so forth? They are the internal earth element," it might be as you say, where the answer singles out what is predominant, because although hair, body hair, and so forth possess matter and so forth, the earth element is dominant. However, in that sūtra, it discriminates the internal earth element by means of hair, body hair, and so forth, and there is no earth element beyond hair, body hair, and so forth; therefore, the Simile of the Elephant's Footprint Sūtra is an exhaustive exposition. This Dependent Origination Sūtra speaks of ignorance and the rest, and like the Elephant's Footprint Sūtra, it constitutes an exhaustive exposition; therefore, apart from the ignorance and so forth spoken of, there are no other factors. This reveals that the cited sūtra contradicts their own \[thesis\] and complies with the other's.
