- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [9.47](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1821.9.47)

> \[On the passage\] 'Furthermore, the intermediate existence of gods... enjoying tranquility and practicing austerities': this clarifies the posture of movement of the intermediate existence. For now, it is explained in terms of those dying in the human realm who are reborn in the various destinies. If explained in terms of intermediate existence taking rebirth elsewhere, the posture of movement is not fixed. For instance, in the case of rebirth from the Akaniṣṭha heaven into the Four Heavenly Kings heaven, there is nothing preventing \[the being from moving\] head downward and feet upward. Just as when reborn from a lower hell into an upper hell, there is nothing preventing head upward and feet downward. Therefore the \*Vibhāṣā\*, fascicle 70, says: 'For now, it is explained based on those who pass away in the human realm. If one dies in hell and is reborn again in hell, one does not necessarily travel head downward and feet upward. If one dies in the heavens and is reborn again in the heavenly destiny, one does not necessarily travel feet downward and head upward. If one dies in hell and is born in the human destiny, one should ascend head first. If one dies in the heavens and is born in the human destiny, one's head should face downward. As for the intermediate existences of the two destinies of pretas and animals, it should be understood appropriately according to where they go.' This is the correct view of the \*Vibhāṣā\*. One should know that the posture of intermediate existence when humans, pretas, and animals each go to their destinies is just like humans and so forth rushing horizontally, like birds flying in the air, or like fully flying immortals.
