> "Having reached the threefold coalescence... is collectively called contact": from leaving the womb up to two or three years of age, having already reached the coalescence of the three—faculty, object, and consciousness. This differentiates it from the preceding stage; not yet understanding the distinctions among the three causes—discordant, agreeable, and neutral—that can generate painful, pleasant, and neutral feeling. The "causes" are precisely the objects; this differentiates it from the subsequent. All the five aggregates in the intervening stage are collectively called 'contact'. Freshly encountering and confronting objects, the function of contact is predominant; therefore it is designated with the name of contact.
