> Fifth, concerning distinctions in abandonment: One should now distinguish \[these dharmas\] in terms of the four alternatives according to abandonment. There are three kinds of dharmas: (1) dharmas acquired in one's own continuum; (2) dharmas acquired in another's continuum; and (3) dharmas acquired in neither. (1) Distinguishing the seventy-five dharmas with respect to those acquired in one's own continuum: Dharmas abandoned through intrinsic nature and not through the cognitive object are: the mahābhūmika defilements, the akuśalamahābhūmikas, the parittakleśabhūmikas, and attachment, aversion, conceit, and doubt among the aniyatas. Dharmas abandoned through the cognitive object and not through intrinsic nature are: all ten kinds of form; avijñapti in part, excluding the anāsrava; a portion of the kuśalamahābhūmika dharmas; and, among the viprayuktas, all the other nine viprayukta dharmas, excluding the four characteristics and a portion of prāpti. Dharmas abandoned both through intrinsic nature and through the cognitive object are: the mind-king; vitarka and vicāra in part from among the ten mahābhūmikas; remorse and torpor entirely; and the four characteristics and the portion of prāpti that are sāsrava. When these are associated with, coexistent with, or the prāpti of what is abandoned through intrinsic nature, they are abandoned through intrinsic nature; when they are not associated with, coexistent with, or the prāpti thereof, they are abandoned through the cognitive object. As for the alternative of being neither: among the seventy-five dharmas, those that are anāsrava are neither of the two abandonments. If one formulates the inquiry broadly with respect to another's continuum: whatever is abandoned through intrinsic nature is abandoned through the cognitive object, because one's own bond, a single fruit, and so forth are abandoned by others. In total there are three alternatives, excluding 'abandoned through intrinsic nature and not through the cognitive object.' If dharmas acquired in another's continuum or dharmas acquired in neither are sāsrava, there is only the single alternative of being abandoned through the cognitive object. If they are anāsrava, they fall under the alternative of being neither.
