> Third, the conditions for the arising of the teachings on emptiness and existence: The teaching of existence was spoken for those who have not yet planted roots of goodness, have not yet purified their hindrances, have not yet brought their mental continua to maturation, have not yet extensively cultivated resolute faith, and have not yet accumulated the provisions of merit and wisdom; it speaks of dharmas as having intrinsic nature, having arising and ceasing, being unstable, and so forth, in order to plant roots of goodness and up to causing them to accumulate the two kinds of provisions of merit and wisdom. For those who have already planted roots of goodness and up to having already accumulated the two provisions of merit and wisdom, the Buddha further relied upon the three non-natures to teach that all dharmas lack intrinsic nature: namely, the non-nature of characteristics, the non-nature of arising, and the non-nature of the ultimate. Furthermore, relying upon the non-nature of characteristics and the non-nature of the ultimate, he taught that all things are without arising and without ceasing, originally tranquil and intrinsically nirvāṇa. Moreover, turning the wheel of the Dharma of the four truths for those setting forth in the Śrāvaka Vehicle is precisely the teaching of existence expounded for the śrāvakas. It was solely for those setting forth to cultivate the Great Vehicle that he taught that all dharmas are without intrinsic nature, without arising and without ceasing, and originally tranquil and intrinsically nirvāṇa. This, then, is the teaching of emptiness expounded solely for those setting forth in the Great Vehicle. This is according to its manifest aspect; in terms of principle and reality, the teaching of existence is universal to the three vehicles, and the teaching of emptiness is likewise universal to the three vehicles, because when persons of fixed nature among the three vehicles hear the Prajñā, they all realize the unconditioned ground of their own respective vehicles.
