> The treatise says, "Afflictions are called appropriation… like a flowering and fruiting tree", which explains the reason for acquiring the name. Here there are three metaphors for phenomena. "Afflictions are called appropriation": that the skandhas acquire the name of appropriation from afflictions is because they arise from appropriation—"like a fire of grass and chaff", naming from the cause. Because they are bound to appropriation—"like the ministers of an emperor", naming from what they belong to. The Miśrakābhidharmahṛdaya states: "The skandhas are driven by afflictions, just as through craving and anger there arise matters such as doubt, and because they can produce appropriation—like a flowering and fruiting tree, naming from the fruit."
