- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [15.79](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1822.15.79)

> On the text "However, as to what was spoken by him … committing a grave offense is also like this": this refutes the Vaibhāṣika's establishment. The Great Master set forth a simile: just as a tāla tree, if its crown is severed, can never again grow and expand, so it is with the bhikṣus who commit a grave offense. This simile of the Great Master demonstrates that by committing one extreme, the remaining precepts no longer grow and expand. For you now to say that committing an offense on one side does not mean all restraints should be universally abandoned is to challenge the Great Master. The defense in the Nyāyānusāra states: "Could severing the crown of one tāla tree prevent the other three from growing and expanding? The simile and the phenomenon are not parallel."
