> On the treatise passage "A sūtra states that four types of persons can generate brahma-merit": From this point onward is the second major section, clarifying the measure of brahma-merit. \*Dhātu\* is translated here as "nature" (xìng), meaning the essential nature of the Tathāgata. The rest of the text is self-explanatory. As for the "ten superior practices", these are precisely the ten wholesome paths of action within the four brahma-merits. Paramārtha states: "This refers to adding six more kinds to the previous four brahma-merits: first, sacrificing one's own life to save a father's life; second, sacrificing one's own life to save a mother's life; third, sacrificing one's own life to save the Tathāgata's life; fourth, going forth into homelessness within the true Dharma; fifth, teaching others to go forth into homelessness; sixth, requesting the turning of the wheel of Dharma when it has not yet been turned." Nyāyānusāra, fascicle 40, states: "Those who are already free from desire cultivate the four immeasurables and are reborn in the heavens of the upper realms, enjoying the bliss of a lifespan of an eon. If they are not yet free from desire, but build a stūpa, erect a monastery, reconcile the saṃgha, and are able to diligently cultivate the preliminary applications of benevolence and the like, they also, just like cultivating the root of the immeasurables, induce heavenly bliss for an eon. Is it not said before that no wholesome karma in the desire realm can summon a vipāka of an entire eon? There is no single wholesome karma that, like unwholesome \[karma\], can in a single moment summon an eon-long lifespan. It was spoken based on such a principle. However, when multiple intentions are generated regarding a single matter, they can successively summon heavenly bliss of an eon's duration. That is, dying there and being reborn among them again; thus the statement of eon-long bliss does not commit the previous fallacy. (According to the above text of the treatise, wholesome karma of the desire realm also does not summon the lifespan of an intermediate eon)."
