> Regarding "āryas and worthy ones": The Shuowen says, "Having much talent and conduct is called worthy." The Guiyuan zhucong says, "Lacking nothing that is not penetrated is called sage." According to the Renwang jing, those before the bhūmis are worthy ones, and those on the bhūmis are named āryas, for the sūtra speaks of "the three worthy and ten ārya \[stages\]." According to this treatise: "'Ārya' refers to the arising of the anāsrava path already attained; being far removed from all bad dharmas, they are therefore named 'ārya,' because they have attained the acquisition of ultimate disjunction." Based on the above sūtras and treatises, the stages of the seven preparatory applications are named "worthy," and those from the kṣānti of suffering onward are named "ārya." Because this chapter explains them extensively, it is titled "Analysis of the Āryas and Pudgalas." Why is it explained after the "Chapter on Anuśayas"? The previous chapter explained abandonment, which corresponds to the truth of cessation. The path is the substance of the ārya, and the ārya is indeed the truth of the path; the path is the cause of cessation, so it is explained afterward.
