> \[On the phrase of\] the śāstra, "The treatise says: up to unconditioned liberation," this explains the three realms in the sūtra. This is the unconditioned liberation among the two previous liberations; its essence is one unconditioned \[dharma\], and three names are established according to three distinct meanings. The Nyāyānusāra, fascicle 72, says: "In terms of the essence of the three realms, they differ only conventionally; in terms of real entities, there is no difference. Why is it said to differ conventionally? Freedom from the fetter of greed is called the realm of dispassion (virāga-dhātu); severing the remaining eight fetters is called the realm of severing (prahāṇa-dhātu); the cessation of all other entities bound by fetters such as greed is called the realm of cessation (nirodha-dhātu). For what reason are the three realms distinguished like this? Because contaminated dharmas are briefly summarized into three: first, those capable of binding but not capable of defiling; second, those capable of binding and also capable of defiling; third, those that are neither, which are dharmas conforming to binding and defilement. Therefore, the unconditioned realized by severing these three are named the three realms of severing and so forth respectively. (The commentary says: the unconditioned of the fetter pervading one fruit, etc., and the intrinsic nature of greed, etc., is called the realm of dispassion. The remaining eight, which are the unconditioned of severing the fetters that are the intrinsic nature of dharmas, are called the realm of severing. When the remaining upward-directed objective-support bonds are severed, it is called the remaining realm of cessation. These nine fetters and the one fruit, etc., viewed in relation to another are cessation, and viewed in relation to oneself are dispassion and severing. Non-defiled dharmas of form are strictly cessation; they are not fixed as general or specific, hence they are called conventional. Now examining the Nyāyānusāra, it is not completely reasonable: the entities of these three are distinct and mutually non-entangling. Non-defiled dharmas are strictly in relation to oneself; that is, the eight fetters are named severing, greed is named dispassion, and the remaining dharmas and fetters without exception are named cessation. This explanation of the three distinctions is logically superior. If not so, the three would be confounded. However, when saying 'conventional,' it is because the nature of these three unconditioned dharmas does not differ, and all can be named severing. The names are conventional, not real, being dispassion and cessation; the three names are divided according to the three contaminated \[dharmas\])."
