> On the Śāstra's 'Because obtained through the power of the path of seeing, it is obtained only through preparation': this explains that among the two acquisitions, it is obtained only through preparation—namely, obtained through the preparation of the path of seeing. What is subsumed under the desire realm arises from reflection, and what is subsumed under the form realm arises from cultivation; neither arises from hearing, because that is slight and inferior. The Vibhāṣā, fascicle 36, states: 'Question: Why is conventional knowledge on the verge of abhisamaya not arisen from hearing, while the wholesome roots cultivated at the time of the knowledge of exhaustion include what is arisen from hearing? Answer: That accessory of the path of seeing is exclusively keen and sharp, being cultivated by the swift path; it is not arisen from hearing like the accessory of the knowledge of exhaustion. The knowledge of exhaustion rests from striving and is an unhurried path, and therefore can cultivate across \[all three\].' (The above is the text of the treatise.)
