- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [28.221](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1822.28.221)

> \[On\] the śāstra's: "Although in general characteristics it is so ... to exhaust the remaining defilements": This explains that speaking in terms of general characteristics, one does not give rise to a lower concentration based on a higher stage's body. If speaking in detail: when born in the higher stage of Neither-Perception-Nor-Non-Perception, giving rise to an anāsrava concentration of the lower Nothingness stage is not useless, because it severs the defilements of Neither-Perception; because one's own stage lacks this superior concentration; because its power is superior to Neither-Perception; because it has not been abandoned; and because it is not worthy of revulsion and condemnation. If based on the lower seven stages, one does not give rise to a lower anāsrava concentration, because one possesses anāsrava on one's own and giving rise to a lower one would be useless; and because it is inferior to the higher anāsrava, one does not give rise to the lower. "To exhaust the remaining defilements" means it is not useless. Because one's own stage lacks anāsrava, it arises out of longing and aspiration, not from other conditions. "Only because Nothingness is immediately adjacent, one does not give rise to the others" is due to their being separated by stages.
