- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [29.4](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1822.29.4)

> The Śāstra states: "Up to: Because they bring about immeasurable fruit." The first part explains the name "immeasurables" (apramāṇa). "Taking immeasurable sentient beings as their object" means naming them after their cognitive object. "Inducing immeasurable merit" refers to the immeasurable cause. "Bringing about immeasurable fruit" refers to the immeasurable result. Because they take immeasurable sentient beings as object and obtain immeasurable merit, they obtain immeasurable fruit. Because these four practices possess the three immeasurables, they are called "immeasurables." The Vibhāṣā, fascicle 81, further offers three explanations: "First: Because they counteract immeasurable defilements of conceptual proliferation; second: Because they counteract immeasurable defilements of heedlessness; third: Because these four kinds are the vast playing-grounds of all noble ones, they are called immeasurables (thus far the text)."
