> The Śāstra says, “Although the nature of the other causes... the general name is used as the specific designation,” which clarifies the derivation of the name. The Samayapradīpikā (Xianzong lun) explains the name of the efficient cause in four ways: First, it says that the cause itself is efficient, hence it is named the efficient cause, because this cause is potent and capable of making the fruit; although the nature of the other causes is also capable of making \[fruits\], yet this efficient cause has no other distinct designation, just as the form āyatana and so forth use a general name as a specific designation. Second, it says: Or again, this cause is capable of making two meanings: because of non-obstruction, it can be named a cause; it can also be named not a cause, because it cannot produce. Third, it says: Moreover, the efficient one is the other's close cause; this \[cause\] can assist that, hence it is named the efficient cause. Fourth, it says: Or this causes another to be able to make something; the other is the fruit, and the cause of what is capable of making is named the efficient cause. Among these four explanations, the first two are karmadhāraya compounds, and the latter two are tatpuruṣa (genitive) compounds.
