- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [8.210](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1822.8.210)

> \[On the\] Śāstra's \[words\], "If so, the verse of the sūtra... there is nowhere to halt": this cites the third sūtra to prove there is no intermediate existence. This verse was spoken by the Buddha to a Brahmin. Brahmins are called "twice-born", because their initial birth is called one birth, and when they receive the Dharma it is called a second birth. After leaving the womb, there are five stages: first, infancy; second, childhood; third, youth; fourth, prime of life; fifth, old age. "You have now passed the prime stage" means having passed the fourth stage of the prime of life into old age. "Arriving at decay, approaching King Yama" means approaching death. King Yama, formerly translated as King Yanluo, is translated here as "pacification"; he pacifies sinful people and judges right and wrong. "Wishing to proceed on the road ahead without provisions": if you have the provisions of good deeds, when you arrive before that king you will be judged to be born in a good destiny; if you have no provisions, you will be judged to be born in an evil destiny. "Seeking to dwell in between, there is nowhere to halt": you fear the evil destinies, and if you wish to seek to stay in the middle, there is nowhere to halt.
