- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [8.33](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1822.8.33)

> On the Śāstra's statement: "Therefore the Sautrāntika teachers \[say\] ... \[proceeding without reliance on matter\]": the author of the Śāstra sets forth the Sautrāntika tenet. Their school's intention is: if at the stage of the cause one is not averse to matter, the mental result that is brought about arises along with matter and proceeds relying on matter. If at the stage of the cause one is averse to matter, in the result the mind and \[mental factors\] do not accompany matter and proceed without reliance on matter. The \*Nyāyānusāra\* refutes this, saying: "This too is unreasonable. If the power of the project-cause were to make that continuity of mind and \[mental factors\] proceed, then at the time when good and defiled minds are present, the continuity of mind and \[mental factors\] would have no basis. Furthermore, just as when sentient beings are in the desire and form realms, through the power of the project-cause their continuity of mind and \[mental factors\] arises along with matter and proceeds relying on matter, so too when sentient beings are in the formless realm, through the power of the project-cause their continuity of mind and \[mental factors\] arises along with the generic similarity and the life-faculty, and without relying on matter proceeds relying solely on generic similarity and the life-faculty. Since it is admitted that for sentient beings in the desire and form realms, their mind and \[mental factors\] can never proceed without relying on the physical body, on what basis could the mind and \[mental factors\] of sentient beings in the formless realm proceed having no basis whatsoever?"
