> The Śāstra says: "The eight great hells ... up to the Avīci Hell." This explains the distinctions among the hells. The \*Nyāyānusāra\* explains: "They are pressed by manifold sufferings, repeatedly swooning as if dead, but quickly revive as before; therefore, it is named Saṃjīva (Reviving). That is, although those sentient beings suffer various cuttings, stabbings, grindings, and poundings, when they momentarily meet a cool breeze, they quickly revive as before; because they revive equal to before, the name Saṃjīva is established. First, their limbs are measured with black cords, and only afterwards are they chopped and sawn; therefore, it is named Kālasūtra (Black Cord). Manifold instruments of suffering come together to press upon their bodies, and they join in bands to slaughter one another; therefore, it is named Saṃghāta (Crushing). Pressed by manifold sufferings, they wail with sorrow in different manners and emit cries of grievance; therefore, it is named Raurava (Wailing). Pressed by acute suffering, they emit great, harsh sounds, sorrowfully crying out and naming their grievances; therefore, it is named Mahāraurava (Great Wailing). Fire turns with their bodies, blazing all around, and the suffering of heat is unbearable; therefore, it is named Pratāpana (Scorching). Whether inside or outside, from their own bodies and the bodies of others, fierce fires emerge and mutually burn and harm them; because it is the extreme among heat, it is named Mahāpratāpana (Great Scorching)." Below, this Śāstra says: "Because they experience suffering without interval (avīci), it is called Avīci. Because no pleasure intervenes in the suffering, it is called Avīci."
