> As for severing defilements, it is to enable sentient beings to escape the three existences. Sentient beings sink into transmigratory flow because their confusion has not yet been extinguished; if they wish to seek escape, they must sever the conditions of confusion. The direct cause for severing confusion is pure wisdom. This treatise directly expounds wisdom; relying on this, the author composed this treatise. Therefore, the text below states: “For what reason was that Abhidharma spoken?” Citing a verse in reply, it says: “Because sentient beings drift in the ocean of existence due to confusion, for this reason it is handed down that the Buddha expounded the Abhidharma.” Thus we know that the composition of the treatise is for the severing of defilements.
