釋曰：初句引證，下三句破異說。說為結等故者，說謂經說，結是九結，等取三縛、十隨眠、三漏、四瀑流。經說結等皆有無明，豈無實體說為結等？

> Explanation: The first line cites scriptural evidence; the lower three lines refute different views. As for "Because it is spoken of as a fetter and so forth": "spoken of" means spoken of in the sūtras; "fetter" refers to the nine fetters (saṃyojana); "and so forth" includes the three bonds (bandhana), ten latent defilements (anuśaya), three outflows (āsrava), and four floods (ogha). The sūtras state that fetters and so on all possess ignorance; if it lacked a real essence, how could it be spoken of as a fetter and so on?
