> The explanation says: From the center of this Jambūdvīpa toward the north, in three places there are three ranges of Black Mountains respectively. There is the great Snowy Mountain (Himavat) north of the Black Mountains, and north of the Snowy Mountain is Mount Gandhamādana (Fragrant and Intoxicating); this mountain has a fragrance such that when people smell it, they become intoxicated. North of the Snowy Mountain and south of the Fragrant Mountain is a great lake named Anavatapta (Free from Heat-Distress), from which issue four great rivers: first, the Gaṅgā River, which issues from the eastern side of the lake and encircles the lake once before entering the eastern sea; second, the Sindhu River, which issues from the southern side of the lake and encircles the lake once before entering the southern sea; third, the Sītā River, which issues from the northern side of the lake and encircles the lake once before entering the northern sea (this is what here is called the Mengjin River); fourth, the Vakṣu River, which issues from the western side of the lake and encircles the lake once before entering the western sea. Lake Anavatapta is exactly fifty yojanas in both length and breadth, filled with water possessing the eight qualities, and none but those who have attained spiritual powers can reach it. Beside this lake is a jambu grove, whose trees are tall and large and whose fruit is sweet and delicious; it is because of this grove that it is named Jambūdvīpa, or it may be that the continent's name is established on account of this fruit.
