> The explanation says: Taking refuge in the Buddha does not mean taking refuge in the Buddha's physical body, but taking refuge in the aśaikṣa dharmas that constitute the Buddha, because the aśaikṣa dharmas are what constitute the Buddha. Furthermore, the Buddha's attainment of the aśaikṣa dharmas is supreme, and furthermore, the Buddha's attainment of the aśaikṣa dharmas enables him to enlighten all beings. Due to these three meanings, one takes refuge. The aśaikṣa dharmas take as their essence the knowledge of destruction, the knowledge of non-arising, and the five untainted aggregates within the Buddha's continuum. Taking refuge in the Saṅgha means taking refuge in the two kinds of dharmas that constitute the Saṅgha—namely, the śaikṣa dharmas and the aśaikṣa dharmas—because these two kinds of dharmas can constitute the Saṅgha of the four practicing for and four established in the fruits; therefore one takes refuge. Taking refuge in the Dharma means taking refuge solely in nirvāṇa; nirvāṇa is cessation through deliberation. The cessation through deliberation realized within the continuums of all sentient beings is wholesome, permanent, and of a single characteristic of quiescence; therefore, one takes refuge in it universally.
