> \[Regarding\] 'four cause the purely white to be exhausted': taking the ninth uninterrupted volitions in each stage of separating from the four dhyānas, these are four volitions that cause the purely white to be exhausted, meaning each can abandon forever the wholesome dharmas of its own stage. The treatise states: 'For what reason are the defiled wholesome dharmas of each stage abandoned only by the final path and not by the others? Because wholesome dharmas are not abandoned by intrinsic nature, since after being abandoned they can still manifest. Rather, only when the defilements taking them as object are exhausted are those wholesome dharmas said to be abandoned, because the wholesome dharmas at that time attain freedom from bondage. Hence, as long as even one grade of defilement taking them as object remains, the meaning of abandonment is not established, because the wholesome dharmas at that time are not yet freed from bondage.' Explanation: As for abandonment through object-bondage, defiled wholesome dharmas are bound by defilements; when the nine grades of afflictions that take them as object are completely abandoned, the wholesome dharmas are freed from bondage, which is termed abandonment through object-bondage. When something does not operate after abandonment, that is called abandonment by intrinsic nature. Because wholesome dharmas may still manifest after being abandoned, they are not abandoned by intrinsic nature. Abandoning wholesome dharmas does not abandon the substance of the wholesome, but only abandons the defilements taking the wholesome as object; since one still possesses the wholesome, it can manifest. Saying 'can manifest' means that while the wholesome grief faculty does not operate after being abandoned, all remaining wholesome dharmas do operate after being abandoned; hence the word 'can' is used.
