> Regarding "those prone to views sever them, \[their essence being\] non-possession," this word "sever" applies both above and below: only those prone to views can sever the roots of good, not those prone to craving. For those prone to craving have an evil āśaya that is extremely restless, whereas those prone to views have an evil āśaya that is extremely firm and deep. By this reasoning, ṣaṇḍhas and the like cannot sever the roots of good, because they belong to the category of those prone to craving; furthermore, this kind of person is like those in the miserable destinies (meaning: "those prone to views" acts by seeing principle through their own discernment, while "those prone to craving" merely believes the words of others and acts out of attachment). Regarding "\[their essence being\] non-possession," one should know that the severing of good has non-possession as its intrinsic nature; that is, at the stage of severing good, the possession of good does not arise, and non-possession arises in succession. The stage where non-possession arises is called severing the roots of good; therefore, the severing of the roots of good has non-possession as its intrinsic nature.
