> As for 'the pure next arises likewise, and additionally gives rise to defilement of its own stage,' what arises following a pure samāpatti is also like that, but in each case it additionally gives rise to the defilement of its own stage. Therefore, immediately following the pure of the peak of existence, six arise, namely the pure and defiled of its own stage, together with the pure and undefiled of the lower sphere of consciousness and sphere of nothingness. Immediately following the first dhyāna, seven arise; following the sphere of nothingness, eight; following the second dhyāna, nine; following the sphere of consciousness, ten arise; the rest give rise to eleven, which can be understood upon reflection.
