> As for 'defiled gives rise to its own pure and defiled, along with the pure of the immediately lower stage,' immediately following a defiled samāpatti, it can give rise to the pure and defiled of its own stage, and also give rise to the pure absorption of the stage immediately below. 'Immediately' means adjacent, as from the samāpatti of the peak of existence it gives rise only to the samāpatti of the sphere of nothingness. Giving rise to the lower pure means: being oppressed by the afflictions of one's own stage, one also conceives respect toward the lower pure absorption; hence there is arising of the lower pure absorption from the defiled.
