> The author of the treatise answers, saying: "Future fruits do not arise from perished karma. Although the karma has already perished, the seeds still remain; it is solely from the efficacious capacity of the continuum, transformation, and differentiation of the karmic seeds that future fruits arise. It is just as in the world a fruit arises from a seed, yet the fruit does not arise from an already perished seed, nor does it arise immediately from the seed; rather, only from the efficacious capacity of the continuum, transformation, and differentiation of the seed can the fruit arise. That is, the seed produces a sprout, the sprout produces a stem, the stem produces a leaf, the leaf produces a flower, and the flower comes last, whereupon it induces the fruit to arise."
