> "It is abandoned upon obtaining the phenomenon or changing stages" is the section on abandoning non-possession. Abandoning non-possession does not exceed two doors: first, abandonment through obtaining the phenomenon; second, abandonment through changing stages. Abandonment through obtaining the phenomenon is like non-possession of the noble path being called ordinary-person nature: when the noble path is obtained, ordinary-person nature is abandoned; this is possession taking the place of non-possession. Abandonment through changing stages means when one is born from a lower stage into a higher stage, or from a higher stage into a lower stage: by virtue of changing stages, one necessarily abandons non-possession. For example, when born from the desire realm into a higher realm, one abandons non-possession belonging to the desire realm; because desire-realm non-possession follows the basis body, when the basis is abandoned, the non-possession is also abandoned. As it is with the desire realm, so it is with the other realms; thus abandonment through changing stages is solely by changing stages that one abandons non-possession, without there necessarily being possession taking the place of non-possession. However, ordinary-person nature encompasses both types of abandonment: in abandonment through changing stages, although one does not completely abandon all ordinary-person nature, there is also a partial abandonment of ordinary-person nature, as when born from a lower stage into a higher stage, one also abandons the ordinary-person nature of the lower stage.
