- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [4.58](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1823.4.58)

> The commentary explains: Regarding "Investigation and scrutiny are grossness and subtlety of mind": investigation (vitarka) means seeking; scrutiny (vicāra) means examining. The gross nature of the mind is called investigation; the subtle nature of the mind is called scrutiny. There is another explanation: the two factors of investigation and scrutiny are the formations of speech. Thus the sūtra states: 'There must be investigation and scrutiny before there can be speech; without investigation and scrutiny there are no such formations of speech.' The gross is called investigation, and the subtle is called scrutiny. 'Formations of speech' means the causes of speech.
