> Furthermore, according to the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 158: "Acquisition is of four kinds: (1) simultaneous with that dharma (this is simultaneous acquisition with the dharma, also called acquisition like a shadow following the body); (2) prior to that dharma (this is prior acquisition to the dharma, also called acquisition like a bull-king leading in front); (3) subsequent to that dharma (this is subsequent acquisition to the dharma, also called acquisition like a calf following behind); (4) neither prior, subsequent, nor simultaneous with that dharma (referring to acquisition upon the unconditioned). As for the acquired dharmas, there are six kinds: (1) some acquired dharmas have only simultaneous acquisition, such as those born of karmic maturation and the like; (2) some acquired dharmas have only prior acquisition, such as conventional knowledge flanking the three category knowledges and the like—some say these also have simultaneous acquisition, which should be subsumed under the fourth class (the explanation states: the fourth class refers to the fourth kind of acquired dharma, which includes both simultaneous and prior acquisition); (3) some acquired dharmas have only simultaneous and subsequent acquisition, such as prātimokṣa vows and the like; (4) some acquired dharmas have only simultaneous and prior acquisition, such as patience regarding the category knowledge of the path and the like; (5) some acquired dharmas possess prior, subsequent, and simultaneous acquisition, such as the remaining wholesome and defiled dharmas and the like; (6) some acquired dharmas cannot be said to have prior, subsequent, or simultaneous \[acquisition\], yet have acquisitions, namely the dharmas of analytical cessation and non-analytical cessation."
