> 'Excepting preceding conditioned dharmas, conditioned \[dharmas\] are the result of predominance': when a conditioned dharma arises and other dharmas do not obstruct it, it is a predominant result; thus the predominant result consists only of conditioned dharmas. 'Excepting preceding' means that conditioned dharmas that have already arisen previously are not predominant results; when viewing the result in relation to the cause, it is either simultaneous or subsequent, and it is never the case that the result precedes and the cause follows; hence it says 'excepting preceding'. Repeating 'conditioned' refers to all remaining conditioned dharmas aside from those preceding; these remaining conditioned dharmas are either simultaneous with the cause or subsequent to the cause, and are called predominant results. The treatise states: 'Speaking of the result of predominance indicates a dependent compound (tatpuruṣa): the result of predominance. Question: "What is the difference between the two results, human effort and predominance?" Answer: "The name 'result of human effort' is applied solely with respect to an agent; the designation 'result of predominance' applies universally to this and the rest. Like what is fashioned by a craftsman: in relation to the craftsman who can fashion it, it obtains both names, result of human effort and of predominance; in relation to others who are not the craftsman, it is only a result of predominance."' Explanation: when a craftsman builds a house, the house in relation to the craftsman is a result of human effort and also a result of predominance. The house in relation to non-craftsmen is only a result of predominance, because non-craftsmen did not build the house, and with respect to non-craftsmen, the house is not a result of human effort.
