### [7.18](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1823.7.18)

> Explanation: The first three lines distinguish phenomena produced by conditions; the fourth line refutes the doctrines of tīrthikas.
>
> "Mind and mental factors \[arise\] from four": this means that mind and mental factors are produced from four conditions. Here, the condition as cause (hetupratyaya) refers to the nature of the five causes. The condition as immediately contiguous \[antecedent\] (samanantarapratyaya) means that mind and mental factors must be induced and produced by an immediately contiguous condition of the preceding moment. The condition as object of cognition (ālambanapratyaya) means that they arise by taking an objective sphere as condition. The condition as predominance (adhipatipratyaya) means that, apart from their own intrinsic nature, all other phenomena do not obstruct them.
