> From 'Question: If that is so' downward is the second section, which next refutes bondage and liberation. This again opens into three distinctions: first, generally refuting bondage and liberation; next, separately refuting bondage and liberation; third, concluding that there is neither bondage nor liberation. First, 'The question says: There should be no root of bondage and liberation, which is unobtainable': the opponent says that saṃsāra is the root of bondage and nirvāṇa is the root of liberation; if, as refuted above, there is neither saṃsāra nor nirvāṇa, then there would be no root; because the root does not exist, there should be neither bondage nor liberation; if there were neither bondage nor liberation, there would be neither ordinary persons nor noble ones, neither causes nor effects; yet in reality there are bondage and liberation, so we know the root is not nonexistent. In the answer, the first half refutes that dharmas have bondage and liberation; the second half refutes that the person has bondage and liberation. The first half says: If the five aggregates could abide for even a single thought-moment, they could be bound and could be liberated; now, as soon as they are about to be bound, they have already passed away and ceased; liberation is also like this. If they could abide for a single thought-moment, they would not be conditioned, nor would there be bondage and liberation. The second half clarifies that sentient beings are ultimately empty, and therefore bondage and liberation cannot be maintained. From 'Furthermore' downward is the second part, separately refuting bondage and liberation, which has two parts: first, refuting bondage; next, refuting liberation. There are two verses refuting bondage: the former verse clarifies that there is no self-binding; the latter verse clarifies that there is no binding by another; whatever binding there may be does not go beyond self and other. Again, the first verse clarifies that dharmas have no binding; the next verse clarifies that the person has no binding; whatever discussion of binding there is does not go beyond person and dharmas. The first verse clarifies that there is no fruit-bondage; the next verse explains that there is no cause-bondage; whatever binding there is does not depart from cause and fruit. The first verse has three parts: 'If the body is called bondage' takes up the opponent's position: if one says this body of five aggregates is bondage. From 'A body that exists is not bound' downward is the second part, directly refuting that an existing body is bound. There are four meanings altogether, due to which it cannot be bound: first, the body does not bind itself, just as a finger does not touch itself; second, if it is the binder, there is no bound; third, if it is the bound, there is no binder; fourth, if there are a binder and a bound, there would then be two bodies of five aggregates. Next, if there is no body, there is neither binder nor bound. The bottom line concludes with a reprimand to the opponent.
