> The eight intermediate continents are: the two eastern continents are first, Deha, translated here as 'Superior,' and second, Videha, translated here as 'Superior Body'; the two southern continents are first, Cāmara, translated here as 'Yak,' and second, Varacāmara, translated here as 'Superior Yak'; the two western continents are first, Śāṭhā, translated here as 'Flattery,' and second, Uttaramantrina, translated here as 'Supreme Meaning'; the two northern continents are first, Kurava, translated here as 'Superior Border,' and second, Kaurava, translated here as 'Having a Superior Border.' The Vibhāṣā, fascicle 172, says: 'Humans inhabit the four continents, and also inhabit the eight intermediate continents. These eight intermediate continents further have five hundred small continents as retinue, in which humans may dwell, or non-humans may dwell, or there may be palaces, which are the palaces of non-gods.' As for the Qishijing, it says: 'Passing half a yojana away from Sumeru to the east and west, beneath the great ocean, there is the Asura King Vemacitrin, whose territory is eighty thousand yojanas in length and breadth; passing over a thousand yojanas south of Mount Sumeru, beneath the great ocean, the dwelling of the Asura King Sampralambha is formed; and so forth up to passing over a thousand yojanas north of the mountain, beneath the great ocean, the dwelling of the Asura King Rāhu is formed.'
