> The tāla tree resembles a palm tree, and its fruit is like a bowl. Beside the great golden cliff is Lake Anavatapta. A verse in the Abhidharmakośa says: "North of this are nine black mountains; / Within the Himavat and Gandhamādana mountains, / Lake Anavatapta is / Fifty yojanas in length and breadth." The Loutan jing and Qishi jing both state that it is north of the Snow Mountains and south of the Fragrant Mountains; the later portion of the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra says it is on the peak of the Fragrant Mountain. The Commentary explains: That its measurement, its four treasures, and its position relative to the continents differ from the Abhidharmakośa is because of differing traditions.
