> "Arbitrator" (sīqì): sī means an administrative office, and qì means agreement or limit; thus it refers to an official leader. Mahāsammata here means "Great Consensual Will"; the great assembly, having an equal, consensual preference, established him together as the venerable one; he is also called Kṣema. Svāmin here means "field-master"; the various kṣatriya clans descend from him. Brāhmaṇa means the clan of pure conduct, or the quiet lineage; the Brahmā king of the first dhyāna is named Quiet, and they claim 'we are the bodily descendants of King Quiet', hence they are called the quiet lineage. Vaiśya means the clan that sits and collects, collecting profits while seated. Śūdra means the clan that tills the fields. Supplementing the omissions, the Abhidharmakośa is cited: The sun traverses this continent along different paths, thereby causing days and nights to decrease and increase. From the second half of the second month of the rainy season, beginning on the ninth day, the night gradually lengthens; from the second half of the fourth month of the cold season, beginning on the ninth day, the night gradually shortens. In the Western regions, the three seasons of heat, rain, and cold each have four months, and the sixteenth day of the first month is the initial day of the first month of the hot season. Thus, from the ninth day of the seventh month onward, the night-time portions gradually grow longer, and from the ninth day of the first month onward, the night-time portions gradually grow shorter; the points at which the increase and decrease end are reciprocal to this. How much does it increase in one day and night? It increases by one lava; when day and night decrease, they also decrease by one lava. The Qishi jing states: The lifespan of the Sun Deva is five hundred years; his descendants succeed one another, all ruling the palace therein and maintaining it for a full kalpa, even traveling northward for six months, advancing gradually northward six krośas within a single day, never for a moment departing from the solar course; traveling southward for six months, also moving gradually southward six krośas within a single day; and while the sun's palace travels for six months, the moon's palace travels an equal distance in fifteen days. It is expounded in detail as in the sūtra. Furthermore, according to the method of the Chinese lands, every five years, five months, and five days there are two leap months. As for the moon's motion being fast: it refers to its north-south path being faster than the sun; that it is variable refers to its motion circling the mountain being slower than the sun. Furthermore, that this sun's traveling far from the mountain produces cold, and near produces heat: because the reach of its illumination is close to the seven golden mountains and Sumeru, it is hot; because it is far, it is cold. When it is slightly tilted above, the half-moon is seen; the Abhidharmakośa says:
