> Regarding the nourishing cause (poṣaṇa-hetu), the first fascicle of the Abhidharma\[samuccaya\] states: "Because the great elements nourish those derived forms and cause them to grow." That explains that all great elements nourish derived form; in this treatise here, it speaks only of nutriment (upacaya): the four great elements, sustained by the four conditions, arise and can nourish derived forms. However, regarding derived forms, the great elements directly nourish the great elements, and only by relying on the sustenance of the four conditions do they then nourish derived forms. Here it is said that only great elements of external conditions can nourish; it is not that the four external conditions are this nourishing cause itself, because being produced means existing in mutual dependence. The five causes, such as arising, are all subsumed under the sovereign cause (adhipati-pratyaya); they may possess all five meanings or not possess all five, and it is not determined that they must possess all. If based on the real meaning, that of direct production, they must be produced from the same nature and not a different nature, and they must be produced from the same category and not a different category, because the tainted and the taintless must be of the same category; they must be produced from the same realm and not a different realm; and the meditative and the non-meditative must be the same and not produced by different dharmas. If one metaphorically speaks of production based on distant mutual dependence, it is uninhibited according to the circumstance; regarding the three categories of ripening, nutriment, and outflow, whether each directly produces its own or whether they produce each other alternately, this is also rationally uninhibited.
