> In the second passage, regarding \[the statement that\] in an aggregation of form there has never been the arising of subtle atoms and so forth: this demonstrates instantaneous transformation, not the meaning of gradual accumulation, differing from the Sarvāstivādin \[view\] that there are subtle atoms within an aggregation. Furthermore, \[the statement that\] it is not that subtle atoms aggregate to form an aggregation of form \[means that\] subtle atoms have no substantial essence, differing from the Sautrāntika view of accumulation forming a large entity; combining the two preceding points, it differs from the Vaiśeṣika view that both the gross and the subtle are real. \[Regarding the statement that\] subtle atoms also have spatial parts: 'spatial' refers to the directions, and 'parts' refers to fine parts. Although they have directions, they have no fine parts, because those aggregated forms have directions and also have parts, since they can be divided and broken down; it is not that the finest subtle atom still has further subtle atoms, and therefore a subtle atom does not possess parts. The first fascicle of the Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi says: 'Subtle atoms have no spatial parts; the direction is itself the part, not referring to the various directions.' Although the two passages differ, they do not contradict each other.
