> Regarding "precisely due to such defiled substantial nature, being without the nature of cyclic transmigration": Because on tathatā there is no nature of cyclic transmigration of the twelve links of dependent origination. The statement "being without the nature of cyclic transmigration" is the seventh line. Regarding "being without the nature of cessation": Because, based on tathatā, there is also no nature of cessation of the twelve links of dependent origination, it says "being without the nature of cessation." Cessation is based on cyclic transmigration; since cyclic transmigration is absent, cessation is also absent. This is the eighth line. Regarding "based on this ignorance and erroneous grasping as a cause, up to the equality of defilement at all times": Because the twelve links of dependent origination have ignorance and wrong views as their cause. With respect to those ineffable existent substantial phenomena, they are the phenomena produced by causes. On tathatā, there is no beginning, middle, or end. Regarding the beginning, middle, and end, there are two different explanations: First, delineating beginning, middle, and end with respect to the three times: the past is called beginning, the future is called end, and the present is called middle. Second, delineating beginning, middle, and end with respect to what projects, what is projected, what produces, and what is produced: ignorance and volitional formations subsumed under what projects are the initial period; consciousness, name-and-form, the six sense bases, contact, feeling, and craving, grasping, and existence, which are what produces, are the middle period; birth and aging-and-death, which are what is produced, are the final period. Now, this tathatā is free from the distinctions of these three stages, hence it says "based on this ignorance, up to the equality of defilement." This is the ninth line. Regarding "based upon tathatā, up to because of equality": This delineates non-birth with respect to the contemplating wisdom being free from conceptual construction and revealing the equal, rational nature. This is the tenth line. As for "able to eliminate defilements," this corresponds to the Daśabhūmika-sūtra: "This bodhisattva is far removed from all mind, intellect, and consciousness, from recollections and conceptual constructions, without craving or clinging, like space, equally entering into the space-like nature of all dharmas." This passage resolves a latent objection: previously, non-birth was delineated with respect to tathatā being free of the parikalpita; fearing that the practitioner's non-conceptual wisdom might also be rejected and eliminated, this passage is presented.
