> The statement that "a portion of the five stages is subsumed under this stage" means that the mindless stage comprehensively subsumes mindless absorptions and nirvāṇa; now it only subsumes the stage without remainder. In the stage arisen from cultivation, it also takes nirvāṇa without remainder, because it is attained through cultivated wisdom and is the fruit of cultivation; hence it is subsumed under the stage arisen from cultivation. All three vehicles share without remainder; this meaning is comprehensible. The eleven stages such as the stage associated with the five consciousnesses are all of a mindful nature, and therefore do not extend to without remainder. Furthermore, here, because it is spoken generally regarding the without remainder of the three vehicles, it is only stated as having portions of five stages; if based on the Tathāgata, there are also the other stages, such as the stage without investigation and without reflection. Another explanation: Consciousness and mind accord with the tainted; therefore, the Buddha-stage does not mention the five consciousnesses, the mental stage, the stages of concentration and distraction, and so forth.
