> Next, explaining the bases of the secondary afflictions, of which there are nine: first, living mutually together, for living together often gives rise to anger and resentment; second, mutual reproval, because reproving one's own faults produces concealment and vexation; third, due to gains and offerings, which gives rise to jealousy; fourth, based on wrong livelihood, which gives rise to deceit and flattering dissimulation; fifth, based on disrespect for venerated teachers, which gives rise to arrogance and negligence; sixth, due to intolerance, which gives rise to harmfulness; seventh, violating the higher morality, which gives rise to shamelessness and unconscionableness; eighth, violating the higher mind; ninth, violating the higher wisdom, because of which the remaining twelve arise.
