> Regarding establishing eight faculties to make evident the virtues and faults of sentient beings, Jing says: to show that faith and so forth are dharmas of virtue that can counteract faults, eight faculties are established. Ji says: among the three taintless ones and the five of faith and so forth, those that are factors conducive to liberation are virtues, while the five of faith and so forth are factors conducive to merit; the tainted are faults. Alternatively: virtue refers to the eight faculties, and fault refers to what is severed by the eight faculties.
