> Ji says: Here there is no further text; thus we know that one lacking the male or female faculties cannot enter noble \[status\]. Furthermore, if treated as in the Hīnayāna, there is no impediment: the male and female faculties mutually exclude each other; \[second,\] a two-formed person lacks the three taintless faculties; third, in the contrast between those who have severed good roots and those who have not, the former do not activate the latter eight faculties; fourth, in the contrast between ordinary beings and noble ones, ordinary beings do not activate the three taintless faculties, while all noble ones are collectively said to have seen the truths, and therefore possess all of them; fifth, in the contrast between those in training and those beyond training, those in training exclude the faculty of one who has fully known, thus having twenty-one, while those beyond training exclude the first two taintless faculties as well as grief, thus having nineteen; sixth, in the contrast between the four approaches and the four fruits: the approach to the stream-enterer has twenty, excluding the latter two taintless faculties; the fruit of the stream-enterer has twenty, excluding the first and last taintless faculties; the approach to and fruit of the once-returner, as well as the approach to the non-returner, can also each have twenty. If one leaps over the middle two fruits and approaches, one excludes the latter two taintless faculties; if one approaches successively, then one excludes the first and last taintless faculties. The fruit of the non-returner has nineteen, further excluding grief; the approach to the arhat is likewise. The fruit of the arhat has nineteen, excluding the first two taintless faculties and grief.
