When one enters the second meditative absorption, because joy is fulfilled, all seeds are completely gratified and the unpliant nature induced by the faculty of suffering ceases to exist; therefore it is said that the second absorption extinguishes the faculty of suffering. If based on the seeds of the faculty of suffering, even an aśaikṣa does not sever the coarseness of the faculty of suffering.
