> Fourth, explaining bases: Jing says, supplementing the gaps: Regarding "one is obtainable based on a non-basis, and the others are obtainable based on all bases": the direct realization through reflection is based exclusively on the uncollected stages of the desire realm, not based on the dhyānas or the formless \[attainments\], whereas the remaining five are permitted to arise across the other six dhyānas and three formless realms. Faith comprises both tainted and taintless, and is understood to arise across the nine stages. Alternatively, as for arising across the nine stages: that the morality concomitant with the path exists in the stages of the six dhyānas is easily understood; but how can morality concomitant with the path exist in the three formless stages? Because that taintless volition remotely wards off and prevents bodily and vocal breaches of morality belonging to the desire realm, taintless morality is also conventionally established \[there\]. Since the fourth and fifth direct realizations are also stated to extend through the nine stages, and the subsequent text further states that only one direct realization attains the fruition of the nine thorough knowledges, and also says that one attains all four fruitions, we therefore know that the fourth direct realization extends through the path of seeing and the path of cultivation; the fifth direct realization, subsequent \[knowledge\], extends through the path of cultivation, and when arising within \[the path of seeing\] is exclusively the likeness path of seeing. This is because any contemplation of the sixteen aspects arising from the subsequent margin after the contemplation of tathatā is generally named a subsequent direct realization, and because it is permitted to arise in all nine stages. The six direct realizations arising in the person of one beyond training are all termed the ultimate direct realization, and are understood to extend through the nine stages. If one does not permit the fourth and fifth direct realizations to extend through the three paths and restricts them exclusively to the path of seeing, then one must allow that one may also enter the path of seeing in the three formless stages, because the treatise states that the other five direct realizations are obtainable in all bases, and also because the text above stated that the faculty of 'learning what is not yet known' exists in the three formless stages.
